The Broncos trading for Dan Gronkowski fills a need for them at the tight end spot. Alphonso Smith hadn't lived up to the expectations of his high draft pick status and was not expected to start at corner for the Broncos this season. Both teams win in this trade so far, depending on the development of both players.
Besides Gronkowski, who had seven catches for 80 yards during the Lions’ preseason, the Broncos will get a late-round draft pick in exchange for Smith.
Gronkowski is expected to replace Marquez Branson as the Broncos’ top receiving threat, a position filled by Tony Scheffler the three previous years. Scheffler was traded to the Lions in April.
The Lions were not expected to keep Gronkowski on the roster, and the Broncos were disappointed with Smith. Smith might have been cut but for this face saving trade. When a team thinks about cutting a player they traded away a first round pick to move up and take in the second round after just one season, that team is down on that player. No doubt about that. Now, as a Lion, can Alphonso Smith become the CB he showed so much promise of becoming in college?
