Lions win first NFL game...

Thats right , I said it. According to Tom Kowalski , the Lions insider at , Matt Millen can no longer be blamed for anything bad that happens to the Detroit Lions. In that very same article , Kowalski also lays the blame for any failures this year directly on Matt Millen , saying the Lions will not make the playoffs this year , but they should not be judged by their won-loss record. Of course , before he said that , he made it clear why the Lions are a bad team , and why they will not make the playoffs , and its all Matt Millens fault.

I just need the Lion fan base to realize one thing , the Lions are not an expansion team. They have players that have been here for years , unless they want to cut the likes of Jeff Backus , Dominic Raiola , Ernie Sims , Jason Hanson , and Calvin Johnson. I don't think that will happen.
The local media has treated the front office like they are new in town , they have been here for years. The very first hire Matt Millen made as a GM was Martin Mayhew , and Tom Lewand has been there for over a decade , even before the 'Millen era' began.

But , hey , on a positive note , fans are excited about their expansion team and its first win. I think the newly built Ford Field will be full the rest of the year. Its about time the Lions got an expansion NFL franchise , fans have been hungry for football for a long time here.

For an expansion team , the Lions are the 5th oldest team in the NFL. There were young , talented players that got cut that the Lions could have claimed on waivers. Terrance Taylor is my first example here , but it looks like the Lions have resigned Chuck Darby. Darby was brought in last season to play defensive tackle for a Tampa Two defense. In fact , Darby was an undrafted free agent signed by the Tampa Buccaneers in 2001. There have been a few fans that think he was brought back after Sammie Hill got banged up because he knows the system. Darby knows the defense that Gunther Cunningham wants to run in Detroit? I doubt it. I do think that his contract is smaller now , and thats the main reason he is a Lion again. Expansion teams don't have players from previous years to bring back. Chuck Darby does not help this team get younger. If this is a team that is rebuilding , sooner or later they need young talent , not just in the draft , but elsewhere.

Aveion Cason was also in for a workout , I would like to think thats where the story ends. Earlier this year , the Lions signed Antone Smith , an undrafted free agent from Florida State. He was cut on July 27th. At that time , Martin Mayhew gushed about Aveion Cason and said 'Aveion Cason, I've always been a fan of his.' I wanted to puke. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Lions bring him back. Wide receivers and defensive backs were also brought in for workouts. Stuart Schweigert was also back in town for a workout with the Lions , but if Aaron Brown is banged up Aveion Cason will be back in a Lions uniform returning kicks. Why not see if rookie Derrick Williams can fill that role? Antone Smith is now a Houston Texan.

The next opponent for the Detroit Lions is the Chicago Bears , the game will be in Chicago , which means it can't get blacked out here in Michigan. Many fans think this could be a win now. I think the Bears win a close game , only because they don't have a high powered offense. Their defense is going to keep the Lions from scoring a lot of points. To win this game , the Lions will need defensive turnovers and great special teams play.
