So , what can we see with all this information?

Well , for starters , Jeff Backus was near the bottom for sacks allowed in 2008 , with 3 left tackles giving up more.

Some of the Left Tackles listed are rookies , to be fair. Ok , so Jeff Backus allowed 12 sacks in his rookie year. No left tackles allowed that many last year , and that obviously includes the rookies. Bryant McKinnie allowed 11.5 sacks in his second year , but didn't play that much his rookie year. D'Brickashaw Ferguson allowed 10 sacks in his rookie year , starting all 16 games. Matt Light allowed 10 sacks in his rookie year , not starting all 16 games. When he did start all 16 games the next year , he allowed 11.5 sacks. Jeff Backus allowed 12 sacks in his rookie year , and if we made a list of sacks allowed for rookie left tackles that were starters last year , Jeff Backus is at the bottom.

Now , lets look at 2007 , and we can see that Jeff Backus allowed 15.5 sacks. Thats horrible. So , was it because of Mike Martz? Martz was the offensive coordinator of the 49ers last year , and Joe Staley was the left tackle. Staley allowed 8.5 sacks in 16 starts. It was his second season in the NFL. Backus gave up more than that in each of his years under Martz. So lets go back and look at the Rams , a team Martz was the offensive coordinator for. The left tackle that played there under Martz for 4 years was Orlando Pace. He gave up 6.50 , 8.50 , 6.50 , and 7.00 sacks in those years , not even near the 15.5 Backus allowed.

Ok , so lets take that even further. Did any of the starting left tackles from 2008 give up 15.5 sacks in their careers? D'Brickashaw Ferguson gave up 13.25 in 2007. Mike Gandy gave up 12.5 sacks in 2006. David Diehl allowed 13.5 sacks in 2007. Jason Peters allowed 11.5 sacks in 2008. No left tackle that was a regular starter in 2008 had a year as bad as Jeff Backus did , at any time in their careers.

Now we can look at the sack total over an 8 year career. Backus has allowed a total of 63.75 sacks in 8 years. How many starting left tackles in 2008 have played 8 years or more?

Tra Thomas - Eagles - has a career total of 60 sacks in 11 years , 48.25 first 8 years.

Orlando Pace - Rams - 12 years , 57 sacks total , 44.5 in his first 8 years.

Chris Samuels - Redskins - 42.75 sacks in 9 years , 39.75 sacks in his first 8 years.

Todd Weiner - Falcons - 45.25 sacks in 11 years , 34.5 sacks in his first 8 years.

Walter Jones - Seahawks - 57.25 in 12 years , 34.75 in his first 8 years.

Flozell Adams - Dallas - 53.75 in 11 years , 35.5 in his first 8 years.

Matt Light - Patriots - 54.75 sacks allowed in 8 years.

Chad Clifton - Packers - 29.25 in 9 years , 21.75 in his first 8 years.

In fact , Jeff Backus has the worst career allowed sack total , giving up more than any starting left tackle in 2008 did over their careers , even if their careers are 12 years. Tra Thomas comes close , with 60 sacks allowed in 11 years.

Now we can take these totals and make a list of left tackles by sacks per year average.

Ryan Clady - 0.5 per year - rookie
Tony Ugoh - 2.25 per year - 2 year career
Jared Gaither - 2.25 per year - 2 year career
Jake Long - 2.5 per year - rookie
Jammal Brown - 2.875 per year - 4 year career
Chad Clifton - 3.25 per year - 9 year career
Michael Roos - 3.625 per year - 4 year career
John St. Clair - 3.6785 per year - 7 year career
Todd Weiner - 4.1136 per year - 11 year career
Jason Peters - 4.2 per year - 5 year career
Max Starks - 4.3 per year - 5 year career
Joe Thomas - 4.375 per year - 2 year career
Branden Albert - 4.5 per year - rookie
Jordan Gross - 4.583 per year - 6 year career
Orlando Pace - 4.75 per year - 12 year career
Chris Samuels - 4.75 per year - 9 year career
Walter Jones - 4.7708 per year - 12 year career
Flozell Adams - 4.8863 per year - 11 year career
Khalif Barnes - 5.4375 per year - 4 year career
Tra Thomas - 5.45 per year - 11 year career

Mike Gandy - 6.107 per year - 7 year career
Kwame Harris - 6.416 per year - 6 year career
Matt Light - 6.8437 per year - 8 year career
David Diehl - 6.916 per year - 6 year career
Bryant McKinnie - 7.1428 - 7 year career

Jeff Backus - 7.96875 per year - 8 year career
Joe Staley - 8.75 per year - 2 year career**
D'Brickashaw Ferguson - 9.08 per year - 3 year career*
Levi Brown - 9.5 per year - 2 year career
Duane Brown - 11.5 per year - rookie***

* - gave up 4 sacks in 2008 in 16 starts.
** - played under Martz , should get better.
*** - bad rookie year , still not as bad as the rookie year of Jeff Backus.

Every Left Tackle that started in 2008 on a regular basis and has played for more tha 3 years has a better sacks allowed per year than Jeff Backus. The Lions have kept him around for too long , he needs to go.

Did I forget to mention that barring an unlikely trade , Jeff Backus will be the starting left tackle for the 2009 Detroit Lions?

1 comment:

  1. This is pretty horrendous.
Walter Jones didn't play 12 seasons, he played 13.
And he didn't give up 57 sacks in his career...are you shi%%ing me?
Jones gave up just 23 sacks his entire 13 year career, which is less than 2 sacks per season (see ESPN, wikipedia, sportsnation, nfl dot com, and specific sites that compiles these stats). Statistically, Jones gave up less sacks than any other tackle in history (per passing play, he gave up a sack every 240 attempts..that is astounding)

Also, you can't compare a guy who played in the league for two or three seasons to a guy who played 13 years. You have two or three great seasons and leave, your numbers are a bit inflated compared to a 13 year veteran.
